THINGS THAT GIVE HOPE

It’s not easy being a famous folk singer. Artists like Jason Isbell, me, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, me, Ani DiFranco, and me are always in the shadow of Pete Seeger, forced to be the acoustic leading edge of the voiceless by our moral centers that dictate we help have-nots. The siren call of “This Land Is Your Land” has become genetically imprinted into, onto, upon, and all up in there in my acoustic DNA. And I should be fighting loud.

However, some of us are at our best giving hope. I'm best at offering examples of personal happenstances of hopefulltude, like below:

~ I had this half-empty jar of kimchee. I added an onion and some fresh chopped cabbage and filled the jar again. Right? I may do this a bunch more times and get jars and labels and start my company “Twice Kim Chee”. This makes me hopeful.

~ I’m pretty certain young, nascent car salesman Jordan thought my crusty eyes were because I was an old man. He probably has parents who get teary, crusty eyes in the cold. If he knew I had been crying in the lot hugging my old Caravan I was trading in with 179K miles, he didn’t let on. That kindness gives me hope.

~ My backpack and fannypack are filthy. It means I’ve been places, seen things of the human experience, that dirt being its very litmus, from Uber and Lyft trunks. Experience informs hope.

~ After the last update, my iPhone now has that Liquid Glass(c) look to its screen, which looks like a layer of wet snot, which is fine because i’m old, my nose runs, and it had that look anyway. Thoughtful. Hopeful.

~ Friend of mine in Florida complained about their “hard water”. I showed pictures of our hard water up here that made it so that 2 tall, strapping, young whytboys from around the corner show up with shovels. Look at them *doing manual labor for me*! Such wondrous hope, even tho this hope costs 40 bucks each

~ I took this picture of a fully horizontal rainbow! THAT is the epitome of HOPE

This is just a taste of the goodness in the world that I am tasked to illuminate for you all. Blessings to us all in these fraught times.

Go Pats.
