PAST SONG

Maybe it’s the handful of minor health things this last couple weeks making me think of final days, of my lineage. I don’t recall what month my father died in 2001, and my brother isn’t up yet to tell me. Maybe it’s a subliminal date memory thing. I don’t know otherwise why this popped into my head.

I don’t recall even slightly how this song from my album “one thru fourteen” goes. I teach a class called “This Song Is For You” at Rocky Mountain Song School, the class being a forum for people’s songs that they needed to write about their stuff sans judgement or any kind of public play or programming. Maybe this is one of those. I never played it out. No one wants to hear a set of this stuff. Somehow it’s still important.

****update - he passed april 29, 2001****

A LITTLE BIT GONE (c)2002 v. gilbert

On the day you were done
There was one last beat of your heart
But only you knew exactly when
That's how it's always been for both of us
For so long.

Here I am getting misty
From your memory and there I go again
I'm lying to myself about you
Just like I've done my whole life long
I guess that's just the thing you do
When someone that you knew was just
A little bit gone

Please forgive me if I'm supposed to
Forgive you, 'cause we both knew
That your final date with the business end
Of a bottle of Johnnie Walker did more than take
The edge off this time

You were good with your hands
You could fix any car or any thing that ran
Except this broken heart and I'm still running
I'm still running though I don't know where or when
Or for how long
I guess that's just the thing you do
When someone that you knew was just a
A little bit gone

Days go by like a sad old sailor
Does no good to keep a lookout
For the joy or hold a grudge
Here in my pocket for almost no one
For so long
I guess that's just the thing you do
When someone that you knew was just
A little bit gone
