name: Michael D Schnitzer
message: Vance - I met you one time several years ago following your performance at the Higginbotham house in NW Dallas, TX. I said something lame like "I went to Penn" to indicate a commonality with Philly (even though my 4 years in West Philly were the only ones I have lived outside of Texas). I have been a fan ever since (the Good Good Man CD I bought that night lives in my car). Not that you would know it because I am a Facebook voyeur. Absorbing good content while never posting anything or (almost) never reaching out to anyone.
My older brother Dana is a fan too, and he knows a LOT more about music than I do (paid his way through college at UT Austin playing his 12 string and singing the popular fare of the late 60s - the life of all of our family get-togethers). As does his son-in-law, Chris McQueen, a guitarist for Snarky Puppy (4 time Grammy winning band!). Dana and I know you are the real deal.
We also know you would have appreciated our late father, Sol Schnitzer, a decorated WWII Army Air Corp pilot that served in the China Burma India theater and volunteered for duty as a glider pilot in the 1st Air Commando Group (he participated in an important mission in the history of aerial warfare to establish a landing strip in the Burmese jungle [known as "Broadway"> to support a renegade British General's attempt to fight the Japanese with an entire Division inserted "in their ribs." The mission has been profiled in an episode of Oliver North's war stories. Never once talked about what he did in the War. Sorry for the digression but the point is that he fits the profile of the Old White Man of which you sing. You have would have been friends, no doubt.
If there was ever a time to reach out, this is it. I wish you well and cannot wait to hear you sing again like ringing a bell (even if you might sound like leather, nails and glue for a while). I imagine it is difficult for you to fathom just how many lives you have touched with your music and your beautiful takes on togetherness and life. I hope the ripples you have made in the pond of life will rebound over you now in a tidal wave of support and love. Thanks for being you and Godspeed. Fondly - Michael Schnitzer
