IT’S REALLY ABOUT ME

Tove Bruning, wife of one of my celebrated original Old White Men, died on May 15th. R. Preston “Pres” Bruning died yesterday, 20 days later.

Can you imagine 2 people loving each other so much that one chases the other into the hereafter?

Her remarkable work as a pottery artist hangs on our kitchen wall - see the pic with paper towel roll in the corner thanks to my excellent photography.

His work - I could show you a million photos. He and his hundreds of model plans are inspiration and legacy to and in our hobby. Legend too at General Motors, where he was key designer of the Lean Machine. Instead here’s a photo of one of his many model designs brilliantly and excruciatingly done by…me. I’ve built at last count 4 of his designs.

Here's some pics of us together.

Me.

This guy.

It’s me that gets to be here as they depart. Me that mourns. Me left here to do art the best I can for the inspiration of us all. Me frightened of the hereafter enough as it is, leaving the hospital today with a clean 3-month cancer bill of health, the guy behind me leaning on his horn at the hyper busy Fruit St. exit at Mass General Brigham festooned with walkers, canes, and ambulances - at a hospital - shouting out his window ,"Take a chance and just pull out buddy!!”

Me, finally, smiling back: “I have all day, sir”

Him: “Well, I don’t!!”

Me, knowing hospitals can be stressful for anyone, whispering to myself, waving lovingly to him: “Well you do now, buddy, if you’re lucky. I hope you have someone to chase into the hereafter. You’re welcome"
