THREE THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN PUBLIC YESTERDAY

An older woman was leaving the P.O. while another older woman was entering, and as I passed by the one entering, she readjusted her bag on her arm which jostled her sunglasses out of her blouse collar and they started their journey to the floor.

As they made it to about her waist in their tumble I squatted and try to grab them with 2 - 3 swipes, missing all times. They clattered at her feet. I finally nabbed them.

Me: “Well, I’m not as fast as I used to be”

Her: “It was a great effort, thank you.”

Me: “...and with all the reaching and swiping I hope it didn’t look like I was grabbing inappropriately at you, ma’am. I hope it looked like my intentions were pure...”

Her: (laughing) “No worries, I’m not reporting it...”

Other woman: “But I could” (looks me up and down with a wink) “However you seem so ...’nice’...”

The three of us are laughing so hard and loud...

On the train to meet my lawyer for a Red Sox game. A young skateboarder enters and sits across from a young woman about his age. The young woman says, loudly, clearly having social communication stuff, how much she likes the design on his board, and goes into every person in her family that has a skateboard and then about people she knows that have skates.

This young man asks pertinent questions at various moments, smiling at her long, breathless, disjointed responses.

We both get off at Park Street. Halfway down the platform, I whisper over to him, “Very nicely done back there, young man...” He replies with a shrug, “Thank you. It was easy”.

I saw it coming. I measured whether catching it or ducking was my best option. One would not ruin my left hand because it was humming. After ricocheting all about where we sat, my lawyer buddy retrieved this foul ball that made its way up to the highest seats at Fenway. He handed it to me. “I have one of these at home already”. It’s the least he could do since he promised me a hot dog and handed me a burrito instead. Seriously? A burrito?
