Demon Lemonade

I have recently been carrying the weight of things I’ve said from the stage, or in class. “These old aggrievances, again?”, you opine? Yeah. The one person out of 300+ that’s offended, hurt, in full misunderstanding mode of what it is I was trying to do.

Even with full knowledge that “outcome doesn’t give a damn what your intent was”, sometimes it just looms. It’s old. Things I did no matter how inadvertent could get you a thrashing. Old. Trash from my past.

No, I don’t readily get over it and I carry them from time to time, the comic part of me protecting myself, that same comedian simultaneously still getting me in trouble.

Makes it seem like the world has a tree root sticking up out of the sidewalk waiting...

Even this conspiratorial flight where messages by satellite never works, seatbacks have to be up before they even collect trash, with the hyperactive seat-kicking child behind me, the guy in front of me trying to make his seat into a bed, with this audiobook narrator making every black person depicted - male, female, whatever - sounds like Isaac Hayes, doesn’t matter because I’m off to teach Swannaoa after a magnificent set at Falcon Ridge folk festival where my set was so good my final song made the ASL interpreter cry.

But I’ll tell you what – knowing that I moved the needle on an audience or I moved someone next to me makes up for all of it.

All. Of. It. For every stumble, there’s 50 lifts. For every misstep there’s 100 gifts. I’m not going to be perfect, and I take stock and responsibility.

I’m ok with that today.

I’m even keel again thanks.

Come see me singing somewhere. I have something to say to you.

Bring it on.
