ANSWERING TWO LETTERS

Letter 1:

Dear Whatever Your Illegible Name Might Be (Julie?):

My accessibility through a PO Box or website is an earmark of being in the acoustic music scene and that’s how your letter found me. That access is simultaneously a wondrous community-forging thing and also a great incommodity of what we do.

Your letter, written in October about a show you went to in January (!) criticizes what you perceive as my search for absolution in a story and song that I told about a mixed couple insulted by my comedy.

You got the story wrong, you got my intent, wrong – as did the insulted couple – and when you ran out of paper on both sides, you just continued around the edges with your writing as if to say that what you were telling me didn’t even warrant a second piece of paper. I can’t even read your name to address you properly.

One thing having cancer and looking death in the face has taught me is that what that couple thought of my comedy matters. What you think matters. To you, to someone. Until it doesn’t. It’s a revolving door between what matters and simple information.

What I do know is that your lectural take in that psychotic, terse, unsolicited screed is rolling towards the “not matter much” scorched side of the What Matters Rotisserie. Sure, you live in my head rent free right now. I have ears and a heart. But I’m older, the lease is nearly up, and I thank you for illuminating that which really deserves the attention of the living. And that which doesn’t.

And for saving a tree.

Letter 2:

Dear Liz:

Thank you for your card of support as you do monthly and have done so for six years. I appreciate you being out there as a fan and your shared stories of love and loss of people and pets. You’re ever so thoughtful.
