Why We So Cruel?

Here we stand
It's the battleground
It's the kitchen floor
It's the silence
In between these words
That make these words of war
So we fight
Just like our ancestors
Much more refined
Much sharper tools
Won't be no winner
Ain't nobody innocent
Same old story
With some brand new rules

We never raise our voices
We can cut with a whisper
Sometimes we're even smiling
So polite, so cool
Tell me why are we so cruel?

Now my daddy
Had a real short fuse
And a real quick tounge
As a younger man
He remembers
How he'd let it fly
Now he can't recall
Where it used to land
And he said

"My heart was like kindling then
And I was burning up inside.
If I ever see the face of God
I'll ask him why. Why?
Tell me why are we so cruel?"

Will we ever shake our history?
Or will it follow us forever?
What's the answer to the mystery?
Do we have to start all over?
Are these bruises so genetic that we
Can't discard the weapons
That our parents and their parents
Used before?

Evolution
Hold me hostage
Save my children
From my tongue
Keep my wicked
Angry language
From my double helix
And from my young

Nobody's gonna win this time
Or get the last word in this time
It never ends or begins
It just goes on and on and on
Tell me why are we so cruel?
Why are we so cruel?
