Flyby

We go by…
Thirty-one thousand miles per hour
All that’s left us are these pictures
Of where we’ve been
It’s been years since we knew
Gravitational slingshot
We’ve used up all of our planets
And fooled our friends

They think that together
We hung both the moon and the stars
They see us in orbit admiring our closeness
But what they don’t see
Is this space in between us
The millions of miles that defy diagnosis

We were like rockets
All anticipation countdown and fire
Our making love left us breathless
And the rest without atmosphere
And if we were braver
We’d just flyby like voyagers
But our greatest intentions leaves us sharing
A couple slices and a beer

One day I swear I’ll just fire up these engines
And be well past Alpha Centauri
Before you even notice
But what would we do
With the space in between us
The millions of miles that defy diagnosis?
