BLACK LAUGHS MATTER - I borrowed this from a fan..xo:

Dear Vance,

Thank you so very much for honoring my request to sing King of Rome at your show last week. It was so beautifully and powerfully performed.

My request was a gift to my husband who is deeply moved by your performance of the song. It usually brings tears to his eyes. My husband can relate to keeping hope when there isn't much to keep in his personal and professional life.

He has also enjoyed being "the other black man" at your shows. It always makes him laugh. He still fondly recalls being called an "engineer" at the first show we ever saw you perform --- at a Unitarian coffee house performance in White Plains, NY. We had just moved up from Brooklyn and were trying to find our way in the burbs. We never really did and ended up moving to western MA.

My husband landed a new CEO-President leadership job recently. When he got the job he broke down crying because he said "they finally let me be the quarterback". A reference to when he was around 8 years old and he was given this position on the pee-wee football team in the new mostly white suburb his family had moved to from the Bronx, NY in order to get better services for his physically/mentally disabled sister. A group of white parents complained and they took the position away from him.

The sting has lasted a lifetime.

Your ability to weave together tears and laughter is profound. Thank you.

Susan
