(Pilot to me as I disembark from Delta Flight #726 from Atlanta when he sees my t-shirt): Nice shirt! You a pilot?

(Me model building & flying evangelist that I am): Thanks! No, I’m a model builder and flyer and amateur aviation historian.

(Pilot): That’s terrific! I build models too. Recently did a little of that with some folks down in San Antonio...

(me): Really? What kind of models?

(Pilot): I recently did the ones covered with tissue paper and powered by rubber bands

(me): I know some folks in San Antonio area that do just that kind of airplane modeling. Did you meet Mike Kelly?

(Pilot): Yes! He was the guy that helped me adjust my airplane and get it to fly!! You know him?

(me): Lets take a selfie and I’ll text him. He’s a bestie of mine.

People relieved that they can finally pass. Me and Captain Devon McCollough, who flew F-117 Stealth Fighters for the U.S. Air Force, step into the breezeway to take a pic and revel in our hobby and the small world this balll really is.

Avril Campbell shows up weekly on VancesMondayNightAcousticPajamaParty in the chat that scrolls with my show. She says something witty and fun and I laugh and decide to banter back. I want to ask her something funny like, “Are you related to Glen?” or “Can you hook a brother up with some free soup?” Instead I go deep history book, past Joseph Campbell, and straight to the mechanized nerd part of my brain:

“So are you related to Sir Malcom Campbell who once held the World Land Speed Record in his aircraft engine-powered Bluebird?”

(Avril, after a long pause of what has to be disbelief): Yes. He’s a distant cousin.
