MY NEIGHBORHOOD PARTS 1 & 2

1) THE NEW FLUID

(Just started jogging up the hill to my house after what I call a long run of just under 3 miles. My neighbor is moving mulch).

Him: How you doin?

Me: Aiight. You?

(He shrugs. We talk about the Sox’s inauspicious start. Our physical ailments)

Him: You look good.

Me: You look good too.

Him: Are we gay?

Me: I dunno. Prolly. Can you be gay for just stretches of time? I mean, I’m mostly gay Wednesdays between 2 and 4:30. PM.

Him: Why so specific?

Me: I dunno. That’s when I most think about a breakfast nook in my workshop?

Him: We should be together. Watch the game. Wings. Pizza. Pay the mortgage.

Me: Shop. Shovel. Remember birthdays. Read books. I’m just not into the physical intimacy part.

Him: Me either.

Me: I mean, hell, that ain’t happening nowadays anyway (head motion up the hill) so not like it’s a stretch

Him: I hear that.

(Long pause)

Me: Your house is too close to the main road though…

Him: Yeah And yours is too far up that hill (head motions up the hill).

Me: Yeah You right.

Him: (sigh) OK. Never mind. Good luck with your knee.

Me: Yeah, thanks. See you round.

2) JOEY DALTON & THE WAY HOME

Sure I recall a kind carrot-topped 7 year old and his toddler sister that would call out “HEYYYY, BUDDY” whenever I went by.
I remember him strumming chords on his steps.
I recall a few vocal lessons.
I remember him shopping for us during lockdown
I asked instructor friends at Berklee to look out for him.
Then he sang on my last 2 albums.
Dinner at 12am in Nashville

I was just at The Burren at a SRO house the other night as he and his band The Way Home left me agape with loud, solid, remarkable rock pop. The band was crack. Imagine U2 meets The Who meets Parliament meets Rod Stewart meets Bob Scaggs meets Steely Dan. The songs are tremendous. I cried at the end. It’s all in good hands.

Yeah he’s my neighbor. Link below
