It’s the evening of Veteran’s Day as I write this. We have two small flags out on our walk. One the American flag, the other is a Gay Pride/LGBTQ+ Flag. With guarded senses of patriotism, equality, recognition of the past, acknowledgement of the present, and hope for the future, I give you this lyric:

THAT FRONT PORCH SONG (c) Vance Gilbert

They come up the front steps
In their dress blues
Stand on my porch
In their shiny black shoes
But the front door's been broke jammed shut
Since my man left home so I tel them
"Come on in 'round the back".

Yeah, my man can fix anything
If you know what I mean
Make that Tower of Pisa
So it don't have to lean
He make me feel so safe and so secure
I just wanna jump up and sing
Thank you Lord

They hand me this letter
All bordered in black
Some papers to sign
And this folded up flag
They tell me he was brave
And I say "Tell me something new

Why he'd climb up the ladder
In the wind and the snow
To adjust the antenna
For my favorite show
He make me feel so safe and so secure
I just wanna jump up and sing
Thank you Lord"

I got a broke kitchen table / I've got a rusted out chevy
And mud in the yard / Up on blocks in the yard
And the house needs a coat of Sherwin Williams
And when I find myself thinking that
Life is so hard
I just think of him
And how he's defending us
From something

Yeah, this one's my oldest
Oldest of five
That I can hardly keep fed
Clothed and alive
We never had nothin
So I guess he ain't got nothin to lose
And just like his daddy
He'll go off to fight
And when I tuck the other four children
Into bed that night
I'll feel so safe and so secure
I just wanna jump up and sing
Thank you Lord
