SOME FRIDAY THINGS OF NOTE

~ I won’t give her name. Just the pharmacy, Walgreens. When she heard me on the phone, even before asking for my DOB, she said "Yo Gilbert!...now, what do YOU need today?”, in faux exasperation. Note that I almost never call this store, handling my prescription refills predominately online. I laughed so hard I almost peed. She then proceeded to scroll back through files looking for the most recent of contradicting screed from my insurance company. She offered to use the general pharmacy card to bring the cost down. Reassuring, extra-mile-ing, kind, most certainly personable, public service at its best. I’m still laughing from her phone answering. Sure, I wrote a smoking good review to the company. Thanks, Linda (oops).

~ Today I explained the need to “shed” to a student who needed to practice a certain piece of music. Jazz and bluegrass musicians might be heard to say “Man, I gotta go *shed* that piece before I play it in public. I know the -ology. Do you?

~ June 19th 1865. I dunno. I guess Juneteenth is important. I just wince that it took 2 1/2 years, from the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, for some Union soldiers on horseback to get the news to these remote Texas “slaves”. I know, I know, there was no email or Twitter or teletype even, still soldiers on horseback can be at the battlefront front miles away in a matter of weeks. Doesn’t sound like anyone was in much of a hurry. It reminds me of the old survivalist Japanese soldiers on remote Pacific islands unaware that Japan had surrendered and that World War 2 was over a decade before. I suppose that’s something to celebrate

Less urgency than laconic whim, an action historically once again at the mercy of what white folks at the time saw as appropriate timing-wise. So, ok, yay, whoo hoo Junteenth (throws Black Power fist partway into the air...)
