THINGS WRITTEN BY OTHER PEOPLE PART 1

Brian White, biology professor at Mass Boston, came to me over a decade ago wanting to sing. He could not. I mean, even knowing if one note was higher or lower than the previous one was indiscernible to him. My partner said in my ear as he left our first lesson, “You CANNOT take that man’s money...”

Well, we did clicker training with our Standard Poodles, why wouldn’t that work...? The dogs wondered why they weren’t getting treats as the clicker went off for an hour once a week.

Brian writes me this letter earlier this week:

“Vance

Just so you should know what you started...it was you who convinced me that I could actually sing (after significant training, of course). Now you’ve created a monster. Some time ago, I auditioned to be a singer in a rock band but they told me my voice wasn’t strong enough. So I went into a funk and have been playing bass (and enjoying it) for a while. Lately, I've been singing at this blues jam I go to and it is FUN. It’s like the band's music is flowing through me and making my voice stronger and it is an AMAZING feeling. I’m not sure I can go back to the farm after I’ve seen Paris.
The thing is, I think I need to choose songs that work well for my voice. I don’t really know how to do this but I fear that the best way is to write my own songs. The thing is, I’m struggling with the fear that if I really let myself out of the cage and write songs, the audience will think I’m either Hannibal Lechter come to life or (worse?) really boring. Look what you started.

all the best

Brian”

This is not a brag on my part. I’m just saying what my voice teacher Eddie Watson said years a go - “If you can speak, you can sing”

THINGS WRITTEN BY OTHER PEOPLE PART 2

Beautiful, timely (for me) poem/lyric by brilliant singer songwriter Ralston Bowles:

I have misread situations
I have given bad advice
I have been an errant patron
I have stepped out on thin ice
I have pushed another’s buttons
I have taken fear for grief
I have offered little recourse
When it comes to non belief
Not all things are what we think them
Not all victories worth the cost
Not all words are worth the speaking
all that wander are not lost

Thanks Ralston. xo
