BRIGHT LIGHTS

The other night while playing the Pajama Party I realized I had left the hanging-arm LED on HIGH. A bright, blue light kinda took over the left front part of my face while I played.

Now, to twist-paraphrase my friend John Flynn, I’m at the age where "lyrics occasionally play hide and seek with my mouth”. I accept that. Particularly if I go for a deep album cut, whateve. And when I’m deep into a tune I look up to my left like I’m trying to see it written in the left inside of my brain.
So last Monday I went looking up to that left quadrant for the lyric to a long undone tune, and there it was in the sparkling blue light thru my eyelids. I felt not so much invincible but solidly home.

Last night an hour or so before I was to play a sold-out John Davidson’s Club Sandwich I checked my email and learned that fellow modeler and wondrous engineer and conversationalist Stefan has passed. Now this lovely teeny NH club with its couches and popcorn has LED lights as stage lights, one of which was at my left shoulder and in my periphery, and no, I hadn’t planned on playing Old White Men as part of the set.

But there I was, in that song, not looking at that bright left quadrant for a lyric, but seeing clearly the faces of that man and his child in the movie that played in my mind’s eye, the bright blue light lovingly highlighting those two, happily flying model planes and laughing.

I don’t know if there is any science behind that place being a place to go for lyrics and love, but as Richard Thompson would say “I wanna see the bright lights tonight”.
