THOUGHTS ABOUT INDEPENDENCE AND ITS DAY

Yo yo yesterday was Independence Day.

Wikipedia be like: “...known colloquially as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States which commemorates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America.” The original 13 colonies proclaiming they be like no longer under the thumb of Great Britain. They was like “We up out"

Did you know the Fifth Dimension did it (the preamble, anyway) as song? - https://youtu.be/IhevfANM09Q Embraced by college radio in 1970, it was banned by Armed Forces Radio and shunned by many pop stations. I get a kick out of the writer’s credits after the song lyrics: "Thomas Jefferson, Julianne Johnson, and René DeKnight.” Damn, Tommy J. All your other writing, the D of C, Sally Hemings as your illegitimate way to the picnic, and a song credit too? C’mon.

45 years later “Hamilton” is a worldwide, billion dollar hit. We’ve come a long way baby.

There are many, many songs of justice and uprising and separation from a ruling body, vociferous celebrations of autonomy. Honestly, it’s the more personal songs of belief that move me to no end. Like this traditional Irish gem as done by a favorite songwriter Paul Brady - Arthur McBride and the Sergeant https://youtu.be/cBGkhPx529g. As an aside, I think of Paul Brady as the Irish Richard Thompson. He’s also written a bunch of stuff for Bonnie Raitt - on piano no less please save me stop with the talent - and lastly he has the nerve to be the nicest guy ever. Damn bro.

I love a song that moves the listener to be ally by taking them aside and explaining rather than shouting. I’d rather a song wave its hand in your face than wave a flag.
