Can racism go cute?

I was running down the Aerial Street cut through (I love this street name - anyone that knows me will know why…) and there was an Asian couple with a toddler who was toddling next to them. It was close-quartered as I passed, and the baby got a good wide-eyed look at me as I slowed to pass, and I looked right back at him and I said “Ni Hao!!”

How dare I.

How dare I suppose these people to be Chinese.

How dare I think that I have an inkling as to what “-ese” these folks might be at all.

But me and my dumb show-off ass, feigning some sort of great inclusive international capability - hell some Asian folks don’t *want* to be mistaken for other types of Asian folks - shouting the only hello Asian greeting that immediately came to mind.

Lame-brained, unwoke, overweight, elderly, thoughtless, sweaty, Black jogger with a stupid hat.

Add to that the child looked startled. Stop Asian Hate indeed. Just paint it on my sweaty shirt, if the paint runs, fine.

Dad says as I pass, “He said Ni Hao!”. I’m now 50 feet away. I hear a loud, high, excited voice “Hiiiiii Hi...Hiiiiiiii!!!” over and over. Adults laughing like mad in the background as I turn my lucky ass onto Forest street.

Awwww...
