I don’t know where or how I first heard this story. I love it.

A tennis pro wins a Challenger Circuit Tournament. He has a very publicly presented $20,000 check on his person as he heads to his car after clubhouse festivities. A man, clearly a fan approaches him for an autograph as he was about to drive off and they begin to chat about racquets, shoes, strokes and such. The man then turns sullen as he tells the pro that he has a wife home with a baby that needs an operation or the baby will die. The pro takes pity and signs the check over to the man and drives off to his hotel.

Next day as the pro is about to hit the road, the president of the tennis association and the board members tell him “We've got bad news for you. That guy - there is no wife, no sick baby - he’s a con artist who’s worked these grounds before!” To the shock of everyone the tennis pro smiles a smile that looks like relief and says:

“There isn't a sick baby? That makes this the best news I’ve heard all day!!"
