ROCKY MOUNTAIN SONGSCHOOL STORY

I was teaching a class called “I’ve Still Got It: Staying Relevant After 50“ to a diverse body of people. Noteworthy was this really cool lady, whom we will call Grace, confessing to be quite confused when it came to moving the capo around on the guitar to change keys, what keys were, and anything music theory.

A psychotherapist sporting a stunning, resonant voice, she also shared with the whole class that she was quite ADD, somewhat autistic, and had some learning issues.

So I took great pride in the fact that I was coaching musical-older-self-care with one hand to some and teaching beginning music theory with the other to one. She was elated to finally understand how musical nomenclature looped from C-D-E-F-G-A-B and back to “C” and how the two C’s were “the same resonance but the last C was 8 higher than the first one”, and how that was an “octave.”

Look, you can split hairs with all that, but when her eyes lit up that she got that and that there was no “H” after “G” you’d understand the elation.

I moved onto some other people, then came back to her and asked her what the gap was between two “C’s” someone just sang was called.

The whole class was silently rooting for her as her brow crinkled, brain-searching for that elusive word denoting that C gap. Her mouth got round with no sound, so I searched frantically for a hint for her success and Lord help me I threw this Hail Mary pass...

“Black, female science fiction writer from the 80s...”

Grace’s eyes went wide.

“Octavi...Butt...Butler...ITS AN OCTAVE!!!”

We’d all still be cheering if we didn’t all have a next class to attend.
