LARRY AND THE RED HAT

Larry couldn’t have been but 5’5” maybe 5’6” and he came to my Boothbay Harbor show last weekend with his lovely wife. They’re in their mid-late 80’s, vital as all get out. He approached me to have a word. He liked a new song of mine called “Wingman“ but what he had to say about it I shamefully can’t remember because he was wearing this hat.

I thanked him for his service, and then simply couldn’t help myself, and I asked if I could trade him a handful of CDs for the hat. He didn’t drop a beat took the handful of CDs and handed me the hat off of his head, saying he’d easily get another. Ask Crys Matthews and Seth Glier, who wondrously shared this night with me, but yes, I did actually hop and dance when he gifted me.

He then confessed “I love your songs but I really have no way to play CDs because I listen to streaming services, but thanks for these...”

Larry flew the Cessna O1-E Bird Dog in Vietnam, then rescue helicopters, continuing that line of work right on into the 80s. I ran to my dressing room and grabbed my little book of planes and had him sign the page next to another “FAC driver”.

He then said with just the slightest disdain, “People see the red hat and they think they know how I voted and I tell them, "Get outta my face! You don’t know me!“

Thanks for the wake-up call to individuality, Larry. It came at a good time.
