THANKS BONNIE

Hey there. It was really great to see you last night.

I need to tell you a story. Yesterday, my neighbor from across the street for 12 years and I’m embarrassed to say we had our first real conversation. Oh, we speak, but this was different. Racism came up and we talked about that racist old lady that lives next door. Then she told me of her youth. She described life at her grandma’s with the pony and a cart. They had “a woman” whom they called Black Mary and she had a child they called Little Black Mary. She told me she loved them both and played with Little Black Mary.

One day she said “Can Little Black Mary play with me and my pony?”

Grandma said “No child. Little Black Mary has chores.”

She said “What chores??”

Grandma: “She has to sweep the chicken yard.”

“But WHY??”

Grandma looked at her and said incredulously “DO YOU WANT TO DO IT?”

Well, no, of course not.

It was at that moment in the conversation that she cracked. She said, “I wish I could tell you I was a young person when I realized how wrong all of that is but it took me a lot longer than I care to admit. I know Black Mary is dead and gone and I’ll never get the chance to apologize but every day I think of how I wish I could find Little Mary and apologize to her.” Her eyes filled with tears and I thought of my own childhood friends.

That was yesterday and then last night I hear you sing Black Rochelle. I bought your CD to give to her so she can know that she’s not alone. Thank you, once again for a lovely night of music and stories. We will see you next time.
