STORY

She's in the front row of my sold out birthday show. She's ever so quietly tapping a cup along with my songs.

I went Vance. “Lady!” I shout to her. “There’s no cup-tapping in folk music! And you need to stop swooning and hitting on me in front of all these people...I AM NOT GOING HOME WITH YOU...UNLESS THERE’S LIKE $35 DOLLARS INVOLVED” or something like that. She doubles over laughing. Her friends to each side of her howl.
As folks filed out, she and her friends came up to me. This lithe, beautiful, bright-eyed woman says, “I’d never go home with you - you’re too young for me. I have 12 years on you!” My mouth fell open.
We were all laughing at this point.

The next day I get this email:

"I was at the concert last night and I wanted to thank you for acknowledging my friend XX in the front row. She has early Alzheimer’s,
She was a real shaker and mover in our community - so nice that she got some special attention from you. A really great gift.
Also, I really appreciate you encouraging everyone to rise to their best selves before it’s too late. I’ve always done that and people tell me I’m very brave, but I’m more afraid of not doing it having almost passed to the other side a few times !!!
Have a great 66th year on the planet. Lots of love. J”

Another case of you never know who you touch until you take the chance and touch them. Happy Birthday to me xo
