THE LATE, GREAT TIM WAKEFIELD’S KNUCKLEBALL AND
RUBBER BAND-POWERED MODEL AIRPLANE COMPETITION

Stay with me here.

My model airplane hobby is like this - when someone flies something really well, for a long potentially winning flight, the clamor around them as to what rubber band thickness is used, its length, how many twists in the rubber, what size of the propeller - all of that is freely disseminated by the one in position to win to the askers, the current first place person often assisting a competitor to the point that they win and the former gets 2nd place. No sequestering of information. No secrets as to winning formula. We are lovely in our equity, quirkiness of community, and competition.

You still with me?

I’m pretty much nascent when it comes to baseball and its history. But I love the laid back pace, long games, and I love putting it on when I am in my shop. I live in Boston so, sure, that's home team. I’ve seen Pedro Martinez pitch - it was like watching a snake uncoil and strike. And I’ve seen Tim Wakefield pitch - not unlike the cartoon when the ball comes across the plate and does a dipsy doodle to the slide whistle soundtrack swoop as the batter whiffs.

That’s the knuckleball. The pitch that is seldom faster than 65 mph. The pitch that makes many everyday people like myself have hope and think “Well, I could do that...”

I love that movie “Knuckleball!” that depicts Wakefield and his knuckle-balling brethren from other teams - the competition - actually coaching each other on this most effective yet mercurial of pitches because, well, no other pitching coach on the planet can help these guys when the grip or the motion goes awry. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, it’s a great movie, I swear. These guys coach each other, then go do battle on their respective teams. You can’t tell me that that attitude isn’t great for the game. Any game.

For all I’ve read, Tim Wakefield was a caring, kind human being. The type of conservative guy that admits he didn’t vote for the first Black President but was proud to see him in office and hoped for the best. An equanimity much missing today.

So Rest In Peace, Mr. Wakefield. May every pitch you serve up up there twist and turn like the rubber bands that power the models I gratefully still get to fly down here.
