WAITING ROOM STORY WHILE EXHAUSTED

Sunday night at the Garde Center for the Arts in New London, CT I opened for Robert Cray in front of about 8-900 people. The evening started with a surprise - I was given a key to the city by Mayor Michael E. Passero, who graduated from Connecticut College, New London in 1979- as did I.

We didn’t know each other. And it’s a small college so you wonder how that happened. Well, I never had money to leave campus. He never had money to do anything but be on campus for class and then go home as he lived in New London.

And here he is Mayor with his English degree and me playing at their big theater with my biology degree.

If he’s half as good a mayor as I was in my set, I think New London will be OK. I put on one of the best opening shows I think I’ve ever done. 1/2 the crowd on their feet when I finished. I sold out all 50 CDs in about 20 minutes – someone even took my custom-burned laser PayPal/Venmo sign as a souvenir.

I didn’t sleep once home. It’s now Monday AM at hospital with my domestic partner for their planned anti-afib heart procedure that I’m sure will go well, even with the dour cardiac nurse proudly dropping that they were a proponent of intelligent design while explaining a procedure. Oh dear. Can we not get an amen for a minute? Rent a bedside manner and do your job, thanks.

Still I’m just grateful.

Grateful that I can drive the two hours home from such a magnificent show and take care of someone I care for, sleep be dipped.

There’s no real deep point to this.

Man, do I need sleep.

Man, am I just grateful that I can be grateful.
