LOUISE STORY #2 - THE MAN WITH THE BLUE TIE

The doorbell rings. It’s not the type of neighborhood in which that happens with any frequency in the middle of the day. But we have neighbors with young kids, so I felt it was important to answer rather than ignore the unsolicited. Louise wasn’t a big barker at stimuli, but she gave a woof and ran to the screened door where she gave another woof at a young Black man in a blue tie.

This man had a clasp file envelope and was slightly taken aback at this large white poodle greeting him with another Black man in her tow.

“She friendly?”, he opened

“Yes. How can we help you?” I braced for litany, a copy of The Watchtower or orders for bean pie. But something told me to give this solicitor a closer listen.

This young man started in. He was selling magazine subscriptions as part of an entrepreneur program initiated by some part of the corrections department. He had done his time, donned his tie, and his mentor was driving him around, now parked at the bottom of the street as he went door-to-door. He handed me a list of magazines that he could sign me up for, and said he’d gladly take a check for this subscription or that subscription if I decided on something.

By this time Louise and I had come out to the steps and stood face-to-face with this man. Louise smelled him, the man warily offering a pat. I went back in to get my checkbook.

The chance I was taking. Scams. Stories. My shitty preconceptions and judgements. It all went through my mind. I wrote the check and handed it to him, shaking his seen-much hand.

He patted Louise on the head again and just before he walked away, he says to me with the slightest nod, “That dog has a face...”

I’ll never forget his 5 words. If you’ve seen me go by “running” please be kind and hide your laugh at the idea of me still getting Runner’s magazine for the last 17 years. And I don’t read them all when they come. But I still get it.

I suspect I always will.
