A FRIEND

I’ve made some of the best friends I've ever had doing acoustic music. I’ve made an equal number of them in my model plane hobby. While both groups of folks I love are aging, we model plane-ing folks are not being replaced, there being fewer of us per week doing what we do. I’m learning that the increased frequency of loss has nothing to do with ever get used to losing these people.

So when someone on your cut/paste email list says “Hey I haven’t heard from (insert older AWOL fellows name here) in quite a while", the heart sinks. I got this today from someone we’ll call Matt:

"People have been wondering if I'd fallen off the face of the earth (it's flat, right?). I'm ok thus far and living still. I've been distracted some with life issues not involving my health. A friend of mine was taken ill in October and i have been transporting him to Albany for oncolgy treatments, surgery, etc. I've been busy with scheduling appoint-ments, dates for blood work, radiation, and chemo as primary care giver. About 19 doctors and the like have been cavortig to solve his issues. Talk about con-fusion! Aaagh! 3-4 times a week till New Years. Good news! He has responded superbly to all this stuff. I now know too freakin much about cancer! Why me? Cuz he has no family per say! That's for another time. I'm retired and told him I'm there.

My projects are on hold, but the last few weeks I've gotten some modeling done. Things have slowed down with my friend for now and i have free time again. Also, recovering myself from carpel tunnel surgery. Right arm, of course, with which i do everything. Cheers,”

With friends like that, who needs?
