THINGS OVERHEARD AT CAMP

My mention, joking, and singing about race in my mini set at song camp, particularly my song Black Rochelle, brought all kinds of responses:

  • “I don’t see you as Black... I see you more like caramel...”
  • Man stops me on the way to lunch: “Mr Gilbert, I was raised by my family to despise Black people. I’ve done so much work. Black Rochelle was the song I so needed to hear..."
  • From an elderly lady who I am sure meant not to disparage the other fine performers that evening: “As for your music tonight, I particularly love how I could understand every single word you said when you sang...”
  • That same evening, someone else, full on serious: “What is that song 'Black Roadshow' about anyway?”
  • When I relayed a few of these stories to songwriting genius, co-instructor, Grammy Winner, and friend, Jim Lauderdale, he contemplated for a moment and suggested “When someone says to you ‘I don’t see color’, tell them after their song ‘Well, I don’t hear pitch…’ "

And the final, best quote i heard, in class, totally sans anything about race:

  • "Well, why can’t older men wear shorts when they perform? I mean sometimes it's hot...”
